During the first week of January 2019, SMART Myanmar conducted a workshop at Hlegu Footwear factory on Effective Workplace Communications and Social Dialogue. This workshop was led by SMART Myanmar's social compliance experts. These sessions are part of a longer program from Oct. 2018 to May 2019, to help the factory improve conformance with international best practices, as well as achieve greater workplace cooperation and more effective communications between workers and managers.
The purpose of the January and March workshops was to instruct 1,950 workers, in total in 5 rounds of training, to advance workplace communication skills between the Myanmar factory workforce and Chinese technicians and managers, especially these sessions focused on understanding the diversity of Myanmar and Chinese nations, their background, histories and concepts as well as to understand better about the mutual benefits of good communications and cooperation on the factory shop floor.
The previous workshops in October, 2018 were focused on first teaching factory management, technicians and supervisors the important and relevant points within Myanmar's labour laws and guiding them in how to implement fully legally compliant and effective systems for such areas as overtime working hours, freedom of association, occupational safety and health, environmental health and safety and related matters. 34 foreign managers and 21 Myanmar supervisors participated in the trainings in 2018.
